Most of the important facts about what makes one table so much better than another have been hidden from us, because the makers and pool table technicians of yesteryear took their secrets to the grave. When World War II was over and our boys came home, they got married and their wives, your mothers and grandmothers, didn't want their husbands over at the pool halls at night. About 1945, when the war ended, a huge number of pool halls and pool table makers began to see the end of the era. Soon the landscape had completely changed and the biggest of those makers, Brunswick, would close up almost completely or get sold off. Today, Brunswick is but a mere shadow of it's former self and builds nothing themselves. They don't manufacture any tables at all any more. Their products come from others. And, many of those OTHERS are small one-horse operators and small foreign makers.
As time passed, a passion for the game, well hidden for two decades, began to surface. Those war vets had raised their kids, had a bit more money and perhaps bigger homes, and could now afford to get back to the game. THIS time at home and still in site of the family. So a new era was born in America and new makers and dealers began to spring up all over the landscape. The problem was that there weren't any experts on pool tables left to get information from. They were either dead, retired or doing something else and these new Johnny-Come-Lately pool table builders were experimenting as they came into the market with their products. The reasons the former big makers did things the way they had, were no where to be found. So these new makers had to experiment. Most of these new products were the worst you could imagine. Many today still are. In the pool table building and selling industry there may be less knowledge than about any other industry. A very few of these table makers have learned the lessons of the past while most of these builders never took the time or made the effort to discover them. They still haven't. Isn't that amazing?
